Issues of the Present

(c) HMS / Sebastian Isacu

Foundations are in a position to independently raise issues of relevance and deal with them. The Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. makes special use of its position in an experimental item on the programme: Here, the Foundation poses questions of social, artistic or scientific importance in order to be thought-provoking and to invite exchanges and interaction.

The title and contents of this experimental item on the agenda are changed every five years. Concluding its subject area, “Dialogue of Values”, the Foundation now poses ten exemplary questions from 2010 to 2015, the “Issues of the Present” – and we are curious about the answers, be they lambent, thoughtful or experimental.

These are the ten questions in which the Foundation is actively promoting programmes.

What is really important?

What creates effect? One of the subjects of the NetworkMagazine

What encourages?

Where does social learning take place?

Who decides?

How do we understand each other?

What is fair?

Where is home?

How does education work?

Where do ideas come from?

With its programme, Studying on Site, the Foundation supports matters of education in Hamburg.

Looking for creative solutions, the Art School Alliance promotes the exchange of German and international artists.

The screenplay scholarship, in between, gives young film makers time to reflect on their own artistic position after their studies, before starting a professional career.

To initiate discussions about these issues the Foundation organizes the Elbehaus Talks as well as events at the Seminar Centre in Siggen.

The Issues of the Present are a recurrent theme present in all other areas of the Foundation’s programme. They are meant to shape events and to allow new approaches. They can give a new impetus in a scientific context as well as in the special working area of nature@toepfer-fvs.
